Forum Move Monday May 4th 2009

OK, for those of you that are not aware we are moving our forums to a new dedicated server, also the forums will be under a new domain SciFiRealms.com.

This should make it easier for page load times and also gives us some capabilities we do not have on our current shared server.

The domain change we feel is a better name that will encompasses exactly what we offer.

SciFiUpdates.com will continue to put out news just as before, and host videos and trailers as always. But there will be no forums there, but there will still be a comment section on each news story. Those news stories will still show up in the forums here and you can reply to them as always.

We will be adding a redirect to the new forums for those that aren't aware of the move.

Change to Forum Login

As of today, the converge server has been taken offline, you will now need to login with your regular username and password as you did before. We are in the process of merging the various forums which made up the ScifiUpdates network into this one, to provide one great community for all things Sci-Fi.

All of our existing members who joined before we first started using Converge, will be able to login is before using their old username instead of their email address.

For all our new members who joined after we converged the forums, your username is the same as your email address, so you will need to continue logging in as you have before. If you wish to change your login username (to match your display name), please send a PM to myself or one of the administrators, and we will change it to one of your choice.

If there are any problems logging in, you can use the password reset feature to retreive your login username and reset your password at the same time.

Sorry there hasn't been any news for last few months, I have to take a hit for this failure, but there has been reasons beyond my control that I have been unable to do so.

Starting Monday April 13, the news, trailers, images, wallpapers and other cool stuff will start flowing again here at SciFi Updates.

Galactic Soap Box is Closed!!

We have closed the Galactic Soap Box, we are still debating if this should be a permanent closer or just temporary. The reasoning behind this closer is:

1. This is a Sci-Fi based site not a political site.

2. With all the turmoil that is going on around the world it's just depressing and we feel that this site should be a get away from whats going on in normal day to day life.

3. A lot of members have just grown tired of it.

If you have input please post it here, but please do not start a debate over this, just post your input and move on.

iQuotes Now Installed

If you haven't noticed a new feature has been added called iQuotes. This function gives a specific area for quotes and will also allow one quote which is the last added to be viewed at the top of all forum pages. All quotes have to be approved by a admin and we will be checking these daily to approve them. It's a pretty cool and easy function to use and you can access iQuotes from the menu right under the header above, so start adding those quotes!

New Forum Look!

We have installed a new forum Template, it's called Jet Black, for those of you that visit here a lot and have one of the older templates set as your default you can change it or just check out the new one by choosing Jet Black at bottom left hand side of any page in forums. It's right next to RSS symbol.

If anyone finds any issues please let us know ASAP so we can look at it. Also if you have any suggestions feel free to voice them.

In a few days we will do a system wide change of the new template for every member, if you like one of the older templates you will just need to reset it as described above as your new default.

New Live Chat

Along with the new look that's coming I have already installed a new "Live Chat" on main site. It's similar to what we had on the old site but it works a lot better and has some added admin features that was needed.

The Live Chat is for registered users only and you will find a link to it in your user menu after you login to main site.

Nationwide salmonella outbreak has killed 6, sickened hundreds

WASHINGTON - Federal health authorities on Saturday urged consumers to avoid eating cookies, cakes, ice cream and other foods that contain peanut butter until authorities can learn more about a deadly outbreak of salmonella contamination.

"We urge consumers to postpone eating any products that may contain peanut butter until additional information becomes available," said Stephen Sundlof, head of the Food and Drug Administration's food safety center.

But most peanut butter sold in jars at supermarkets appears to be safe, Sundlof said.

"As of now, there is no indication that the major national name-brand jars of peanut butter sold in retails stores are linked to the recall," Sundlof told reporters in a conference call.

Officials are focusing on peanut paste, as well as peanut butter, produced at a Blakely, Ga., facility owned by Peanut Corp. of America. Its peanut butter is not sold directly to consumers but distributed to institutions and food companies. But the peanut paste, made from roasted peanuts, is an ingredient in cookies, cakes and other products that people buy in the supermarket.

"This is an excellent illustration of an ingredient-driven outbreak," said Dr. Robert Tauxe, who oversees foodborne illness investigations for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

So far, more than 470 people have gotten sick in 43 states, and at least 90 had to be hospitalized. At least six deaths are being blamed on the outbreak. Salmonella is a bacteria and the most common source of food poisoning in the U.S., causing diarrhea, cramping and fever.

Officials said new illnesses are still being reported in the outbreak investigation.

The salmonella case has touched the Kellogg Co.
, which has recalled 16 products as federal officials confirm contamination at a Georgia facility that sent peanut products to 85 food companies

Kellogg had asked stores this week to pull some of its Keebler crackers from shelves as a precaution. But in a statement late Friday, the Battle Creek, Mich., company said voluntarily was recalling the crackers and other products.

�The actions we are taking today are in keeping with our more than 100-year commitment to providing consumers with safe, high-quality products,� said David Mackay, Kellogg�s president and chief executive.

The recall includes Austin and Keebler branded Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers, in addition to some snack-size packs of Famous Amos Peanut Butter Cookies and Keebler Soft Batch Homestyle Peanut Butter Cookies.

Health officials in Minnesota and Virginia have linked two deaths each to the outbreak and Idaho has reported one. Four of those five were elderly people, and all had salmonella when they died, although their exact causes of death have not been determined. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the salmonella may have contributed.

An elderly North Carolina man died in November from the same strain of salmonella that�s causing the outbreak, officials in that state said Friday.

The CDC said the bacteria behind the outbreak � typhimurium � is common and not an unusually dangerous strain but that the elderly or those with weakened immune systems are more at risk. Salmonella is the nation�s leading cause of food poisoning; common symptoms include diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps.
